James 4:1-4

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

  1. Two major themes in this passage:

Confirmation of the fact that sin, and strife, begins with our own selfish motives and the desires that we seek to fill.

God is at war with the world. Satan has led a rebellion of the fallen and there is a war between him and the Father. There are sides. If we choose to live in this world, and to live for temporal pleasure and not for His kingdom, then we become His enemy. We are set against Him and His purposes and we can’t try to live in between.
