1 John 4:20-21

20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

  1. To love God is not to make statements and claims. Loving God is obedience and adherence to His commands. To love Him, I must love others, be self-denying, and esteem others higher than me. I can’t accomplish this by looking out for myself, ignoring those around me, and paying lip service to God.
