Acts 6:1-4

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews[a] among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

One response to “Acts 6:1-4

  1. This is an awesome evolution of the church that is written and saved for us so that we can see God’s mind in service and the growth of ministry. The 12 knew their calling and their gifts. They also did not debate the need to serve those neglected. So they called men full of the Spirit and wisdom to charge them with this ministry. They spread the weight of the work so that they would not neglect their prayer and their teaching and so that division would not come up in the body.

I heard a speaker recently teach about meeting people’s needs where they were and not what we thought they needed. You can’t expect a starving mother to listen to the Gospel until you feed her and her children. Peter knew that the church needed to attend to these concerns, to meet these needs, and that in so doing the church would continue to grow.
