Mark 6:21-23

Chapter Blog – Deuteronomy

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”

  1. This man was using his power in a dangerous way . He was rewarding people because they appealed to his flesh and he was making promises without knowing the outcome.

Part of being rewarded with power and authority is the ability to know how and when to use that authority. Power is like a talent and if we don’t know how to use the gifts and the abilities that were given to us then they can be taken from us.

  2. Would you say that Herod might not have made that promise if he hadn’t invited all those high-class guests? Something like Peer-pressure maybe? I know it was true in the next few verses but what about this section?

  3. Karsen, Herod had to follow through with what he said—he gave his word…if he went back on it, it would look bad in the eyes of others and would negate his authority…He gave his word and had to follow it through.

We have to be careful not to put ourselves in a position to be tricked!
