Colossians 1:16-18

www.gypr.wordpress.com Psalm 52

16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

  1. I am not really sure what it is talking about other than that God is the creator of everything even if we cant see or feel them. And that he has power over everything and that without God being in charge there would be no direction or purpose behind him being God. Kind of lost on the whole thing so sry if it didnt make anysince…

  2. This is actually speaking of Jesus, not God. Jesus is the Creator and this passage is kind of a Father’s way of bragging on His Son and letting us know the importance and supremacy of Christ.

So that in everything, He might have the Supremacy. That is how God set up the world to operate and it lets you know how much God loves, admires, and respects His Son. He gave Jesus the Kingship of the universe and set up all of history to point to and to revere the Son.

Knowing all that, now remember that this is the same Son that God chose to sacrifice and kill to save you.

  3. Like Rick said this about Jesus and it ties into the whole Trinity thing. He created everything and is everything. This pretty much explains who Christ is and how we need to recognize that.

  4. Verses 13-23 seem to be giving an overview of what the gospel actually is, what God is, and the sacrifice Christ made for us. We can see this because Paul says in verse 23…”This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.”

I did a little studying this morning and it looks like the church at Colosse was dealing with a lot of heresy and false teachers. Paul wrote this letter with the purpose of refuting the heresy in the church. We can see in this passage (and the verses surrounding it) that he started with stating the truth about Christ.

verse 16 is summed up in the first few words, “by him all things were created.” This helps us to understand that God created all things and is above all things.

Verse 17 says that Christ is before all things, meaning that he was present before everything was created.

Verse 18 is talking about Christ being the first to rise from the dead into heaven. It is because of him that the church is able to be saved. All of these things, make him supreme, or above everyone.
