John 3:28-30 2 Corinthians 12

28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.’ 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.  NIV

28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. NKJV

  3. This is John the Baptist telling everyone that he is not the important one. His pupose is to point the way to the important one, Christ. The Bible often refers to the church as the bride of Christ and to Christ as the bridegroom (groom). John compares his role to the bestman who is not jealous of the attention that the groom gets. Instead he helps get everything ready for the groom and then rejoices when the groom comes. Just like John we are not supposed to promote ourselves. We are supposed to promote Christ (vs. 30).

  4. Good job Merry.

Our job in ministry is to point people to the Christ and to bring glory to the Son. This is what John was confirming. He had developed a following and he was telling people that he was not upset now that Christ had come and “taken” his followers. He knew this to be the whole purpose of his ministry and we must understand the same thing. We don’t teach, sing, play, act, greet….. to be seen but to point others to Christ. And as the best man is not jealous of the groom, we are not desirous of the affections of man, we are there to rejoice when people turn their affection to God. Our importance and our pride must diminish so that Christ can receive all the honor.

  5. Amen To Merry–Great breakdown–

John does the comparison of the bride and bridegroom and then really paints the picture by just flat out saying…I have to decrease in order for Christ to increase…

    any other questions?!?

  6. This is a continuation of the passage from yesterday where John was saying that he was not called to the same ministry that Christ was, and that that’s ok to not be the most important one or to be in the limelight. He is continuing that thought here, and he ends by saying that he (John the Baptist)must decrease, or become less important, so that Christ and His ministry can come to the forefront.
