John 3:19-21 2 Corinthians 10

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”  NIV

19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”  NKJV

  1. I find this scripture funny, not hahaha funny but interesting. Dont we all have things about ourselves that we are not proud of, things we have said or done? Walking in darkness, no one can see these flaws, and we can “get away” with more. If we step into the light, embrace it, honor it and its truth we have no deeds or words to be ashamed of. Gossip, being “2 faced”, purposely trying to hurt each others feelings, jealousy…its like a bacteria it needs the dark to thrive and grow. So lets open the blinds, pull back the curtains..walk the walk and talk the talk…in the Light of Jesus.

  2. Ok today teenagers who are unsaved love the world(darkness) and everything in it and don’t want to be apart of what God has planned for us (light) so they always do evil things and they are afraid that their sins will be found out. They always think they can get away with everything they do wrong, but like the Bible says be sure your sins will find you out. And those who love the light do what God says and it shows it through their faith in life and that is of God.

  3. jus becuz we were born into darkness doesn’t mean we have to live in it….god provided a way out of the darkness but the only way is thru him…..when we do evil things like the scripture said….we hate the light….n the light to me is christ jesus….n thats not someone i hate or should be hated….but living in the darkness does nothing for u but living in the light takes u out of the darknes…

  4. People today don’t want anything to do with God because they are living in sin and they like it. They don’t want to change there ways. It says that men love the darkness instead of light, It is almost always easier to do wrong than it is to do right, they only want to please themselves and not God

  5. Once that u start to stay in the dark u will stay there and u kno that the light is right there infront of u but u decide to stay where u are cuz u like it and u dont feel like chaging and u really dont care at the moment but then u see the people that are in the light and u see how they act and see how they live there life and once that u have seen that then u would kno that they have God in there life.

  6. This is the verdict or the condemnation–we read and studied yesterday that there is no condemnation in Christ but that those that do not believe in Christ are already condemned…so what is this about condemnation in the next verse???

The condemnation that John is referring to is the choice to not relinquish, release or remove the darkness aka to walk away from their own ways, their vanity and pride,…

In verse 20 I think of a black light and teeth—now this may be a bit sick or embarrassing but a majority of us have been around a black light—what does it do to your teeth…well for some it turns them greenish yellow and others glow bright white…why…well the black light picks up the plaque and funk of your teeth…the nastier your teeth, the “yellower” your teeth get…Now I know I brush my teeth and take care of them but I sometimes get a bit shy and cautious around a black light cuz I dont want people to think I got nasty teeth…why—because I drink a lot of sweet tea and it darkness my teeth and they shine yellow…

This is kind of the same thing here…People will avoid hearing the gospel, going to church or hanging out with Christians because the black light will shine on their teeth and the funk will show up yellow and they dont want to change…Make sense…

vs 21–but those that desire to do what is right, pure and true, catch a hold of Christ and allow their deeds, motives, actions to be exposed, revealed, to be placed under the black light to ensure that they are truly living for God for the purpose of God’s will not their own agenda…

How about allowing God to apply the black light of His Holy Spirit on your mouth to see what it reveals!?!

  7. Ronnie brought up a good point about verdict and condemnation. What do these two words mean? Okay think about the court system. Alright I am a Law and Order junkie! I know they are pretty silly but hey it’s my thing. But what is a verdict….a verdict is the decision made by people to decide if you are guilty or not guilty. Condemnation is the sentence you receive after you have been found guilty. So my point is that we are all guilty rather or not we receive condemnation depends on rather or not we decide to chose light or darkness. If we chose light, we chose life, we are given the promise of eternal life. If we chose darkness, we chose death, we are given the promise of eternal condemnation.

  8. I think of that DC Talk song “I wanna be in the light”. If we love God, if we desire to be more like Him, we must walk in the light, because He is the light.
I was thinking about all the things the world does that have to stay in the dark–clubs and bars are dark, because people feel more uninhibited to do anything they want to do. Night is of course the scene of most crimes, because there are less people to notice, and because it is easier to get away with stuff. The world loves darkness so it can hide the stuff they ought not to be doing.
This verse is very similar to the last one–Mat 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

  9. The analogy being spoken of here is truth. Truth is absolute only in its form as having come from the Father, the source of all truth. There are two types. The words and actions of Christ in His earthly ministry, and the codefied word of God (Bible) His eternal truth.

To be in the light means to bring your life, your thoughts, your desires, and your actions under the microscope of the Bible. If the Bible reveals your actions are sin, the then are brought into the light and must be dealt with.

Most of us love our sin, especially our secret sins. We know that they are wrong and in contradiction to the light, the truth. We can either choose to reveal these to God and have Him deal with them, or He will choose to reveal them by His light at a time and manner of His choosing.

There are several kids in COFY that are very unconfortable when light is being shined (the Bible is being shared). You sleep, pass notes, talk, and do whatever you can to avoid the light (Bible, Sermon). According to this passage, it is cause your deeds are evil.
