  1. There are several types of “laws” and we need to focus in on which one is being discusses.

    1) There is the cermonial law which was given to the Jews and which was done away with when Christ became the new covenant
    2) There is the law of man and governements
    3) There is the moral law of God which will never go away

This clearly is talking about the moral law of God. The law of mand and the moral law of God often walk hand in hand, but sometimes to obey the law of man is to break the law of God. In these cases, the moral law of God must always be our priority.

John Gill’s commentary makes a great point by saying that we can break God’s law in: word, deed, or even thought. You don’t have to always follow through on an action to have broken God’s law, and sometimes you can seem to obey with your acts, but your attitude and thoughts break the law of God.

This verse is talking about a perpetial act of sin and living outside of God’s plan. John is letting us know that to align ourselves with sin and against God’s moral code is to set ourselves up to face the wrath of God’s holiness and to live outside of His protective grace.

  2. THE LAW WAS GIVEN TO MAKE SIN KNOWN. GOD HAS GIVEN US THE LAW NOT ONLY TO MAKE US AWARE OF OUR SIN BUT TO SHOW US HOW TO AVOID IT. IF WE DON’T KNOW WHERE WE ARE, AND WE DON’T SEE A NEED TO LEAVE, WE STAY RIGHT WHERE WE ARE (I HOPE THAT MAKES SENSE IN MY HEAD IT DOES). ONCE WE FIND OUT WHERE WE ARE(IN SIN), WE KNOW ITS WRONG FOR GOD’S PEOPLE, NOW WE NEED TO KNOW WHERE TO GO TO GET RID OF IT. THATS ALSO WHAT THE LAW DOES FOR US. SINCE WE NOW KNOW WHAT GOD EXPECTS FROM US WE ARE TOLD THAT “HE WHO KNOWS TO DO GOOD BUT DOES NOT DO IT, TO HIM THIS IS SIN” JAMES 4:17 WE CAN NOT CLAIM IGNORANCE AS CHILDREN OF GOD WHEN IT COMES TO SIN. YES THERE MAY BE ACTS OF UNINTENTIONAL SIN BUT WE ARE STILL ACCOUNTABLE FOR IT. IT IS OUR JOB TO KNOW WHAT GOD EXPECTS AND TO FOLLOW IN IT.

LAWLESSNESS IS TO BE CONTRARY TO OR WITH OUT REGARD FOR LAW. TO BE WITH OUT REGARD WE FAIL TO OBSERVE OR PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT WE KNOW.

  3. sin is obuiously something we shouldnt be doing because god told us not to and laws were also made not to be broken so it makes sense that sin is lawlessness since god told us what to do and what not to do

  4. I remember a few years back being taught the true meaning of sin…it means to miss the mark…If anyone has ever shot at a target and hit the bullseye its a great feeling and a great accomplishment…and to be honest there is some joy in just hitting the target in some manner…in thinking about this illustration…we as Christians sometimes get some joy for hitting the target somewhere because we feel like we have accomplished something…yet God is truly letting us know unless we are hitting the BULLSEYE…we have missed altogether…Rick made some great points about sin not just being an action but a thought…I just think its time that we truly begin to accept sin as what it is…failure to hit the bullseye…time to stop making excuses and compromises…but setting our sights on the bullseye and not settling till we hit it and become an expert marksman! and this will come through a steady hand (a steady relationship with Christ) and a steady eye (studying and worshipping)
