54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.

The religious leaders arrested Him and took Him to the high priest. Again, this was in the night and with no air of legitimacy. To salve their consciences they try to hide behind the legitimacy of their positions, when really they were silencing Him because His truth hindered their schemes.
Peter followed along, which is more than I would have done. Christ has already bound his sword,yet he felt compelled to stay close and see what occurred. His betrayal, which is to follow, would not even been possible had he not put himself into danger by following close to Christ.
