We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true–even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. NIV
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. NKJV
And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we are in God because we are in his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life. NLT
And we know that the Son of God came so we could recognize and understand the truth of God – what a gift! – and we are living in the Truth itself, in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. This Jesus is both True God and Real Life. The message

We have been given understanding and wisdom by Jesus himself, through our relationship with Him. Col 3:16–”Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…” Eph 3:10–”To the intent that now…might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.” Through this understanding we can know that we belong to Christ, and since we belong to the Son, we also belong to the Father. 1 John 3:1 says “…the reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.” We recognize that “…Jesus is both True God and Real Life.”

First thing that comes to mind is when Christ ask the disciples who do people say that I am,…and they go on to describe him in a very high class of people/prophets…but then Peter steps up and is like hey, you are Christ, the son of the Living God…Jesus responds that you haven’t learned this on your own, but that God in heaven has enlightened you…Our understanding and realization of Christ comes from the father…
Another thought is the parables that Christ used…when he shared these, the disciples asked why he spoke in parables and Jesus responded Matt 13:11-He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. We have to recognize that our recognition and understanding of the things of Heaven only come when God reveals it to us…That is why we have to go to God to ask him for understanding and wisdom…James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. God is more than willing to reveal and share, depending on those that want to know and learn…
So when it comes to these scripture verses…do you just read and expect the understanding to come or do you study it through commentaries and then ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you…

This verse is also easier to grasp when consumed in chunks and not all at once. Like Ron said, the Spirit will give you understanding and enlightenment if you seek Him and desire to know Him. God didn’t inspire the Bible to be a puzzle or giant word search book, it is a love letter and the true lovers will receive it.
1)”we know that the son of God has come” this literally means as the incarnate man Jesus. He came to earth from the Godhead
2)”and has given us an understanding” The truer meaning of this is; has given us a new way of seing things or given us the ability to perceive things in a new light
3)”that we may know Him who is true” As opposed to all the false gods who had been taught and worshipped. Jehovah is the one true GOd and this is understood by understanding why Jesus came
4)”And now we are in God because we are in his Son, Jesus Christ” OUr acceptance of Jesus as our priest makes Him “ours” and we are “in Him” or we are GOd’s children by Jesus. Since Jesus is God, our relationship with Him makes us “in God”
5)”He is the only true God, and he is eternal life” This is clearly referring to the antecedent, Jesus Christ. He is the true God, or one with GOd, and it is Jesus who is eternal life since He defeated sin, Satan, and death by His resurrection.

Before Christ came we could not understand God. He was distant from us. People worshipped Him as best they could. When Christ came he revealed God to us. When He died the veil in the temple that separated man from God was torn meaning that we cold have personal relationship with Him. We are in truth or in Christ means that withouth Christ there is no salvation. We live because of Him and He is God.
